Refrigerant buying guide

Use the system nameplate and manufacturer documentation—not cylinder color or guesswork—to confirm the exact product before ordering.

Refrigerants are not interchangeable

Do not substitute, blend, mix, or retrofit based on a similar name, pressure, or cylinder color. A qualified technician must verify equipment approval, lubricant, components, charge procedure, safety classification, and legal requirements.

1. Six checks before checkout

1

Read the nameplate

Record the exact refrigerant designation and equipment model. Confirm it in current manufacturer service literature.

2

Confirm application

Identify stationary HVAC, commercial refrigeration, or motor-vehicle A/C. Certification and product requirements differ.

3

Confirm cylinder size

Compare required net refrigerant weight, not the cylinder’s gross shipping weight or physical appearance.

4

Check compatibility

Verify equipment approval, components, fittings, lubricant, recovery tools, leak detector, and safety class.

5

Check credentials

Determine whether Section 608, Section 609, employer authorization, or resale documentation is required.

6

Review delivery

Confirm the U.S. address can receive the product and allow time for verification and compliant ground transport.

2. Common refrigerants at a glance

This table describes common market applications only. It is not a compatibility or installation recommendation.

RefrigerantCommon application contextImportant buying check
R-22Existing legacy stationary A/C and refrigeration equipmentProduction and import for most new U.S. supply has ended. Confirm existing-system need, legal source, Section 608 eligibility, and whether reclaimed product is specified.
R-410AMany residential and light-commercial stationary A/C and heat-pump systemsNot a drop-in replacement for R-22. Confirm the nameplate and high-pressure-rated equipment.
R-32Newer compatible A/C and heat-pump equipmentA2L refrigerant. Use only with equipment and tools designed and approved for R-32.
R-454BNewer compatible residential and light-commercial HVAC equipmentA2L refrigerant. Confirm exact manufacturer approval; it is not automatically interchangeable with R-410A.
R-134aCertain automotive A/C, refrigeration, and other application-specific systemsConfirm the equipment and intended-use category. Large cylinders do not qualify for the limited small-can MVAC exception.
R-1234yfMany newer motor-vehicle A/C systemsA2L refrigerant with application-specific equipment, fittings, service tools, and Section 609 considerations.
R-404ACertain existing commercial refrigeration systemsConfirm exact system designation and regulatory or manufacturer transition guidance before purchase.
R-407ACertain commercial refrigeration applicationsBlend characteristics and system approval matter; do not substitute for another R-407 product based on the number alone.
R-407CCertain stationary A/C and heat-pump applicationsConfirm exact equipment approval, lubricant, and manufacturer service procedure.
R-448A / R-449ACertain commercial refrigeration systems and approved conversionsOnly use where the equipment manufacturer or a qualified engineering procedure expressly approves it.

3. What to verify on the product listing

  • exact ASHRAE refrigerant designation, such as R-410A rather than a general product family;
  • net refrigerant weight and cylinder type;
  • factory seal, valve, label, batch or lot information when applicable;
  • product condition and whether it is virgin, reclaimed, or another clearly identified category;
  • manufacturer or supplier SDS and handling information;
  • intended application stated on the listing; and
  • purchaser certification and destination restrictions.

If a listing conflicts with the received cylinder label, do not connect or use the cylinder. Contact us with the order number and photos.

4. Net weight versus cylinder weight

A “25 lb cylinder” normally describes the nominal net contents, not the total package weight. The gross shipping weight includes the cylinder, valve, guard, packaging, and refrigerant. Do not determine fill level by comparing against an unrelated cylinder or by visual appearance.

If you suspect an underfilled or incorrect cylinder, keep the factory seal intact and contact support before connecting it to equipment. We may request the product label, batch information, package photos, and a documented weight from an appropriate calibrated scale.

5. EPA certification check

Stationary-system refrigerant generally requires appropriate Section 608 eligibility. MVAC purchases may require Section 609 eligibility. Employers and authorized representatives may need to submit additional employment or authorization documentation.

After ordering, send only the requested credential information to support@coolgasdepot.shop from the order email address. Put the order number in the subject line. See our complete EPA Requirements & Refrigerant Purchase Policy.

6. Shipping and receiving

Eligible orders include free standard U.S. shipping. Refrigerant may require ground service, hazardous-material packaging, destination review, and a signature. Inspect the package promptly and never use a leaking or severely damaged cylinder. See our Shipping Policy and Safety Information.

7. Common ordering mistakes to avoid

  • ordering by cylinder color instead of the equipment nameplate;
  • assuming two refrigerants with similar numbers are compatible;
  • confusing gross package weight with net contents;
  • buying a large cylinder under the small-can automotive exception;
  • ordering before confirming the required credential or employer documentation;
  • shipping to a P.O. box, reshipper, or destination that cannot accept hazardous materials; and
  • opening the seal before reporting a suspected wrong or damaged product.
