How to Choose the Right Refrigerant for Your HVAC System

Selecting refrigerant is not a matter of choosing the newest product or the cylinder with the closest pressure. The correct refrigerant is the one the HVAC equipment was designed, listed and documented to use. Using the wrong product can change operating pressures, capacity, lubricant behavior, safety requirements and service procedures—and may damage the system.

This guide explains a practical process for identifying the right refrigerant for residential and light-commercial HVAC equipment. It is written for purchasing and planning purposes; charging, recovery, retrofit and repair work should be performed by properly trained and certified professionals using the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

The first rule: Never select a refrigerant by cylinder color, appearance or guesswork. Read the equipment nameplate and service documentation.

1. Start With the Equipment Nameplate

The outdoor unit or packaged system normally has a manufacturer nameplate showing the specified refrigerant and factory charge. The service manual may also list the approved oil, charging method, piping limits and adjustment procedure.

Record the following before ordering refrigerant:

  • Manufacturer and complete model number
  • Refrigerant designation printed on the nameplate
  • Factory charge and any line-set adjustment instructions
  • Compressor and lubricant information
  • Whether the system is original or has a documented retrofit label
  • Any manufacturer service bulletin applicable to the model

If the nameplate is missing, unreadable or conflicts with a retrofit label, stop and verify the system history. A qualified technician may need to identify the refrigerant and inspect the equipment before service.

3. Do Not Treat “Replacement” as “Drop-In”

A refrigerant may be marketed for an application category without being a universal drop-in replacement. A proper retrofit can involve recovery of the original charge, leak repair, oil evaluation or conversion, replacement of seals or controls, expansion-device adjustments, pressure and temperature verification, and new system labeling.

R-407C, for example, has been used in manufacturer-approved R-22 retrofit applications, but refrigerant manufacturers note that lubricant compatibility and temperature glide must be addressed. R-32 and R-454B have an A2L safety classification and belong only in systems designed, listed and serviced for the selected refrigerant.

Never mix refrigerants to “top off” a system. A mixed charge can produce unpredictable properties, complicate recovery and make the refrigerant unsuitable for normal reclamation channels.

4. Check Safety Classification, Tools and Training

Refrigerants differ in toxicity and flammability classifications, operating pressure, fittings and required service practices. Modern A2L systems include design and service requirements intended for mildly flammable refrigerants. Technicians should use approved tools and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, applicable codes, SDS guidance and workplace safety procedures.

Do not assume that tools, recovery machines, vacuum pumps, leak detectors or cylinders approved for one refrigerant are automatically approved for another. Confirm ratings and compatibility before beginning work.

5. Consider the U.S. Regulatory Context

EPA’s Technology Transitions Program places sector-specific limits on higher-GWP HFCs in certain newly manufactured or installed products and systems. These requirements do not mean that every existing system must immediately be converted. The service refrigerant specified for an existing unit may remain available, while new equipment transitions to other refrigerants.

For R-22, EPA states that existing equipment may continue to be serviced, although new production and import ended in 2020. For current HFC restrictions and compliance dates, consult EPA’s live sector table because requirements can be amended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can R-32 be added to an R-410A system?

No. Although R-32 is a component of R-410A, an R-410A system was designed and listed for the R-410A blend. R-32 has different properties and an A2L classification. Use only the refrigerant specified by the equipment manufacturer.

Is it illegal to service an existing R-22 system?

No. EPA permits existing R-22 equipment to be serviced. Since 2020, new R-22 may no longer be produced or imported in the United States; recovered, reclaimed or previously produced supplies may be used.

Can refrigerant cylinder color identify the product?

No. Always use the product label, shipping documentation and system nameplate. Never rely on cylinder color alone.

Who may purchase stationary HVAC refrigerant?
